What Does A Clutch Do?

A-1 Auto Tech, Inc. 89 Pioneer Way Mountain View, CA 94041 (650) 487-2240A-1 Auto Tech, Inc. is the best Clutch Repair Auto Repair Shop in the Mountain View, CA area. Since your engine is always turning, and you don’t want the wheels of your car to always be turning, there needs to be a way to engage and disengage the wheels from the turning motion of the motor. A clutch provides this service for us.

Automatic transmissions have a sort a clutching system internally. It is not called a clutch but it does the same thing. The transmission diagnostics is different than clutch diagnostics. A clutch is what we call the device in a “manual transmission”, activated by an extra pedal on the floor, when you are driving a “manual” transmission. A manual transmission is one where you manually switch the vehicle into the different gears.

A clutch is a spring loaded pressure plate that when it is engaged presses very tightly against a vehicles flywheel. A Flywheel and a clutch pressure plate are basically two round turning pieces of metal that when engaged push up very tightly against each other. When engaged the motor flywheel turns the clutch which in turn turns the axle of the car and the car moves down the road.

The clutch pressure plate has pads, similar to brake pads, on its side that pushes up against the flywheel so that it is not metal on metal. You can see a picture of a clutch pressure plate in the image on the above right of this page.

How Can I Tell If My Clutch Is Wearing Out?

When the clutch pads get so thin that the rivets holding them onto the pressure plate sticks into the metal of the flywheel, your clutch is worn out. If it get to this point the rivets will dig into the metal of the flywheel and scar it. If this happens not only do you need to replace your clutch pressure plate, but the flywheel will need to be turned so it has a smooth surface again as well. You can tell that the rivets are digging into your flywheel when you engage the clutch and you hear a metal on metal screeching noise.

Clutch pressure plates usually start to slip before they get to be metal on metal like that. What happens is when you are driving your car in a specific gear your engine will rev up when it shouldn’t. When it does this you know your clutch is slipping. This is when you should bring your vehicle into us to get your clutch replaced. It is a cheaper repair if we don’t have to replace the flywheel. We will always turn it to get the surface of it smooth again. But your flywheel will last longer (not have to be replaced in other words) if you are not always digging the rivets into it.
