A-1 Auto Tech, Inc. is the best Brake Rotors and Drums Auto Repair Shop In Mountain View, CA. A brake rotor is the disc like metal shown in the image on the right that brake pads squeeze to slow the car wheel down to stop the car. This is the most commonly used braking system. As you can see in the image the brake pads fit around the two sides of the rotor and squeeze together to cause the friction needed to stop the car or truck. Brake systems that use a brake rotor are also called disc brakes. This is the most commonly used braking system in today’s vehicles.

Brake Drum

A brake drum is a piece of metal that brake pads push out on to slow the wheel down and stop the car. It is a different way of doing the same thing. You can see an image of a brake drum on the right. In this case the brake pads fit around the axle of the vehicle inside the drum and push outwards on the drum to slow the wheel and stop the car. Some vehicles will have a brake drum system on the rear of the car and a disc brake system on the front of the car.

Do Rotors And Drums Wear Out?

Yes they do. As the pads wear out they also cause wear on the metal drums or rotors. This is especially true if the brake pads have gotten thin enough to where the rivets that hold the pads on are rubbing against the rotor or drum. Then the metal rivets dig gouge lines into them. Replacing the pads without correcting the wear of the rotor or drum will cause the new brake pad to wear out much faster.

There are two ways to correct the wear on drums and rotors. The simplest is to purchase new ones and replace the old ones. If the rotors or drums have enough metal on them it is also possible to smooth or resurface them by “turning” them on a lathe. This is cheaper and allows you to reuse the drum or rotor. Turning them cuts away the top layers of the old roughed up metal until you can again get a smooth surface. In most cases rotors and drums can only be turned one time. The next time the brakes are repaired the drums or rotors would then need to be replaced.

Can A-1 Auto Tech, Inc. Turn Our Rotors Or Drums?

Yes we can, we have the lathe to do so. We also have the expertise to know if your drums or rotors are still good enough that it can be turned. Turning the drums and rotors can save you some money over replacing the drum. But you only want to do it if there is enough metal there to do so without compromising the integrity of the metal.
