As trucks and SUV’s grow increasingly popular in the US, features like four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are becoming more popular than ever. These two systems are different but both are used to allow power to be supplied to both the front and rear differentials. This allows for maximum traction to be available.
This is ideal for adverse road conditions such as: wet roads, snow, ice, sand, and mud. Many people enjoy having these features in their vehicle to increase safety while driving in these conditions. These systems, like all others, need occasional repairs. It is important that you have an auto repair shop that you know has expertise in repairing these systems. Our ASE certified expert technicians are more than capable to repair any four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle.
4WD Vs. AWD
What is the difference between all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive? The difference is that all-wheel drive vehicles utilize a center differential whereas four-wheel drive systems use a transfer case. A center differential allows the two drive shafts to spin at different speeds. This makes an all-wheel drive vehicle capable of driving on slippery surfaces as well as on dry surfaces.
Four-wheel drive systems utilize transfer cases which makes the two drive shafts rotate at the same speed. Driving with the two drive shafts rotating at the same speed on dry surfaces will cause drive-line bind-up.
All-Wheel Drive Repair
All-Wheel drive systems will occasionally need repair. One part that can fail is the viscous clutch. This component allows for momentary wheel slip. This coupling device is what makes all-wheel drive systems possible.
This viscous clutch cannot handle constant slippage. Doing things like driving on a spare for an excessive amount of time or using tires that are worn differently will cause the clutch to be constantly slipping which will lead to it overheating and failing.
